Ajman University Conducts Seminar on Breast Cancer Awareness
As part of its ongoing efforts to extend breast cancer awareness among the community members, Ajman University (AU) in collaboration with Amina Hospital, held a seminar on campus under the theme “Early Detection for Your Protection.” The seminar organized by AU’s Office of Medical Services, Office of Student Life, Athletics Unit and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety as part of Pink October Awareness Month, was aimed at imparting knowledge to students, faculty and staff members on how to combat the disease.
Dr. Suhasini Gupta, Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist, Amina Hospital, informed the audience about the latest developments in breast cancer treatment, including risks assessment, genetic screenings, and the overall road to recovery, during the seminar.
Dr. Gupta highlighted the importance of regular breast screening, including self-breast examination and how it is done, information on mammography screening and the importance of early detection which can lead to successful treatment and higher recovery and survival rates.
She pointed out that the seminar is aimed at not only educating women, but also raising general public awareness about the latest technology used in the detection of breast cancer.
The lecture was then followed by a Q&A session, where the audience addressed their questions to Dr. Gupta. At the end of the seminar, informative leaflets from the Ministry of Health and Prevention, mammogram vouchers and gift bags from Amina Hospital were distributed among the participants.
Students from the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, who are members of the Health and Wellness Club, gave a presentation under the supervision of Dr. Nihal Ibrahim and Dr. Hala Al-Obaidi about breast cancer, including its symptoms, preventive methods and phytomedicines (herbs that are used to cure and prevent cancer). The club also held a Pop Quiz competition for all topics covered in an effort to increase student awareness of this important topic and encourage them to participate in early screening. Gifts were awarded to contest winners.
The Office of Medical Services at AU organized clinical check-ups for interested participants along with BMI test, blood pressure test, blood sugar test and a breath test to determine the level of carbon monoxide.
The Unit of Athletics also took part by introducing several activities, which included warm-up sessions to emphasize the importance of regular exercise and its impact in the fight against many diseases. The event included several competitions and recreational activities, which aimed to raise awareness of breast cancer through challenges and prizes.
